The Wadden Sea is one of the areas with the greatest bird diversity in the world. Migratory birds, in particular, which stop here, contribute to this diversity. In the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea alone, over 2 million birds rest here each year. Right at the start of the Migratory Bird Days, however, we’re not setting out to find as many individual birds as possible, but rather as many different bird species as possible. Whether it’s a chaffinch, a herring gull, or an oystercatcher, they’re all equally interesting! And for every newly discovered bird species, Kai Pagenkopf and Reno Lottmann from the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park Association (Förderverein Nationalpark Niedersächsisches Wattenmeer e. V.) provide information about its origin and destination. The more species we spot with binoculars and a spotting scope, the better off we’ll be as we kick off the Migratory Bird Days Aviathlon—the competition among islands and regions to see the most bird species.
