Nature experience: Orchard meadow on Juist - Where does fruit actually come from?

Have you ever wondered where your apple really comes from? On Juist, you can answer this question in a very relaxed way - in the middle of nature and just a few steps away from the rescue station and fire station.

What originally began as a compensatory measure as part of the development planning for the new fire station is now much more than that: the newly planted orchard combines nature conservation, biodiversity and a lively community in a special way.

The project was initiated and implemented in a joint effort by the building maintenance and building administration departments of the island municipality of Juist. Orchard meadows are among the most species-rich habitats in Central Europe. They offer insects, birds and small animals valuable retreats - and thus make an important contribution to biodiversity on the island.

Discover biodiversity

A total of 21 different fruit trees await you on the Juist orchard meadow: apple, pear, cherry and plum trees grow here as well as currant, thorn and raspberry bushes and mirabelle plums.

Old, regional and particularly robust varieties were deliberately selected. They cope well with the special conditions on Juist and at the same time preserve a piece of traditional fruit culture. Depending on the time of year, you can experience the splendor of blossom, ripening fruit or the harvest season - each phase has its own magic.

A place for everyone

The orchard is more than just a natural space - it is a community project. Every tree and every shrub has a sponsor. The project was supported by numerous Juist institutions, associations, businesses and committed individuals - including the mayor, the DEHOGA Island Association Juist, the Juist Foundation and the Juist Heritage Society.

An additional flowering area provides additional splashes of color and a habitat for insects. You can take a break in the small seating area, enjoy the North Sea air and listen to the humming and chirping.

And best of all: the orchard is open to everyone. Picking and tasting is expressly permitted for your own use - with respect for nature and other people, of course. Don't damage any trees, keep your dog on a lead and take your garbage back with you. In short: enjoy yes, reckless no.

Curious? Then discover on Juist how fruit grows in its original state - maybe your next apple will taste a little better for that very reason.
