Juister Wadden Sea

Wadden Sea on Juist: this is your nature highlight on the North Sea

In the heart of the Wadden Sea UNESCO World Heritage Site, you are located on the car-free North Sea island of Juist right in the heart of this unique landscape - and can experience it up close. The Wadden Sea stretches around 500 km from the Netherlands to the Danish border and is a huge, dynamic ecosystem of around 10,000 km². More than a million soccer pitches full of life - that's pure North Sea feeling!

The fascination of the Wadden Sea on Juist: experience nature and biodiversity

The Wadden Sea is teeming with life: On just one square meter, you can discover up to 100 lugworms, 2,000 cockles, 4,000 mud crabs, 100,000 mud snails and millions of sand dwelling animals. This mudflat wonderland has been a World Heritage Site since 2009. The mudflats are home to around a quarter of all plants and a fifth of all animal species found in the whole of Germany.

And the best thing is that you can actively discover this nature! Whether you're trudging barefoot through the mud or wearing wellies - on a mudflat hike on Juist, you'll get to know the flora and fauna of the Wadden Sea and really understand what makes this landscape so special.
Of course, it is important that you never go into the mudflats alone and without a local guide. The Wadden Sea has tidal flats that fill up quickly. The current can also pull at you. Never underestimate the power of the Wadden Sea and treat this habitat with the necessary respect.

Experience mudflat hiking on Juist

A mudflat hike is almost a must on Juist. Whether with the family, alone or in a group - you hike across the seabed, observe creatures and hear exciting stories about lugworms, cockles, shore crabs and more - real North Sea stars!

Barefoot in summer, warm wellies and thick socks in winter - the Wadden Sea shows its wild side at any time of year and invites you to dive deeper again and again.

Protection, mindfulness and respect for the Wadden Sea

The Wadden Sea is not only beautiful, but also fragile. Juist is right in the middle of it: That's why protecting this habitat is a top priority here. Special protection and national park zones (from the quiet zone to the recreation zone) preserve nature. You can enjoy it, but please only on the marked paths and ideally as part of a guided tour.

Accessibility
